The government will look at lowering the price of three-ply face masks to below RM1 per piece.
Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi told Parliament today that this is because manufacturers are currently producing adequate mask supply.
"We will review either at the end of September or October to reduce the price (from the present) RM1 per piece.
"We will lower the ceiling price after the review," Free Malaysia Today quoted the minister saying, in reply to Cha Kee Chin (Rasah) who had touched on the issue.
The ceiling price of three-ply face masks was reduced from RM1.20 per piece, to RM1 each, beginning August 15.
The price reduction was done following the government ruling that made the wearing of face masks in public places mandatory, from August 1.
Those who are caught flouting the ruling are fined RM1,000.
The compulsory face masks was enforced amid the spike in COVID-19 cases in the country, since early July.
As of yesterday, Malaysia has a total of 9,724 confirmed COVID-19 cases, and 125 deaths.
Globally, COVID-19 has infected more than 23.8 million people, and killed over 817,000.
