Patriotism is not about raising the flag once a year to celebrate Merdeka, or preaching the Rukun Negara, only to not follow any of the tenets contained within, on other days.

It is about seeing the Jalur Gemilang as a representation of the independence we cherish, understand its meaning and protect it, and the country it represents, come what may.

A soldier is going viral on social media after he was captured on a series of photographs, getting down from a car and walking on the fast lane of a road to pick up a fallen Jalur Gemilang.

The photos were posted by a Facebook user named Mohd Fitri, believed to be a member of the Armed Forces, on Wednesday morning.

"This reflects the heart and spirit of every soldier, every ex-soldier, their families and supporters.

"It is not the flag we worship, but we understand the value and meaning of our flag," he had captioned the photos.

It is unclear where and when the photos were taken.

At the time this article was written, the post has been shared more than 3,800 times and received more than 300 comments, the majority of which praised the soldier for the act.
This comes just about a week ahead of the National Day, and amid certain quarters calling the role of the armed forces into question.

IJM Corporation and Gamuda Berhad founder Koon Yew Yin, in a recent blog post, described members of the Malaysian Armed Forces as "doing nothing except eating and sleeping."

Following widespread backlash, the tycoon apologised, and removed the offensive post, but not before police reports were lodged against him.

The police has confirmed that he is being investigated 505(c) of the Penal Code for incitement.
