Squash Champ Sivasangari Wins Australian Open Title!

  • 12 Jul 2019

National squash player S Sivasangari has won the Australian Open women's singles title, after defeating Japan's Satomi Watanabe.

This is the 20-year-old's second title of the year, after winning the Racquet Club Pro Series in St Louis, United States, last April.

Sivasangari, who is ranked No 48 in the world, lagged 5-11 behind Satomi in the first set, but came from behind to close out the match with 11-9, 11-9, 11-9, in 39 minutes, at the Bega Squash Club in New South Wales, last Sunday.

"Satomi came out really strong and I was struggling in the opening set.

"I then played direct rallies a bit more from the second set and just stayed positive," she was quoted saying by the New Straits Times.

According to her she is good friends with Satomi, who is ranked No 53 in the world, and have played against the latter many times during their junior days.

Sivasangari is the third Malaysian to win the Australian Open title since the tournament's inception in 1979. Former world champion Nicol David won it in 2011 and 2012, and Low Wee Wern won it last year.

The Kedahan lass is pursuing a degree in Mass Communications at the prestigious Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, one of the Ivy League schools in the United States, is currently on a three-month study break.

She is coached by former world champion David Palmer.

Let's hope Sivasangari will win more titles and recognition in the future, and perhaps fill the void left by former champ Nicol David, who retired from the sport last month.
