Meet the Little Powerhouse Who Has Interviewed and Sang for the PM!

  • 10 Jul 2019

How many of us would have had the privilege of interviewing and singing a tribute to the prime minister, while rubbing shoulders with the country's "Rock Queen"?

Kashika Selvam is only 11, and she has done all the above.

The teenstar of Astro's Ceria Popstar recently recorded a rendition of local songstress Ella's "Standing in the eyes of the world" as a tribute to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, for their birthdays. Mahathir turns 94 today, while Siti Hasmah turns 93 on July 12.

The 3-minute plus song dedication by Astro Gempak features Kashika and four other teenagers belting out the number with Ella herself, interspersed with clips of Mahathir and his wife.

To the uninitiated, Kashika sat down with both Mahathir and Siti Hasmah, for a candid interview called "Hello Tuns", in conjunction with their birthdays in July last year.

Speaking to Astro Ulagam, the Year Five pupil of the Infant Jesus Convent 2 in Malacca, dubs the recording as the highlight of her career.

This despite her having basked in camera lights since she was just 6.

"I was not nervous (about recording the song). I was happy that I was able to sing for the prime minister," she says, in a phone interview.

The tribute song was recorded last Wednesday.

Kashika hopes to interview Mahathir again for another round of candid talk, to ask him how things have changed in the country under his leadership in the past one year.

Despite her frequent appearance on television, things have not changed much in when it comes to treatment from her friends, she says.

"They know that I appear on TV and all, but they treat me just normal. I'm not a celebrity," she quips.

Although her previous TV appearances through the Ceria Popstar programme have mainly catered to the Malay crowd, her "Hello Tuns" interview has made her noticeable by Indians and Chinese, says Kashika's father Selvam Madahvan.

"I consider this (the 'Tuns' interview and song recording) as achievements of her lifetime.

"This is the highlight of her career, and her hard work, and luck, had brought her where she is," he told Astro Ulagam.

To those who would like to follow little Kashika's career, you can catch her on Instagram, Facebook, Youtube and Tik Tok at her id kashikaselvam.

Meanwhile, let us all join Kashika and the whole nation in wishing both Mahathir and Siti Hasmah a wonderful birthday, and many more years to come!
