Israeli Company Brews Controversy By Putting Gandhi's Image on Beer Bottle!

  • 04 Jul 2019

Apart from Indian independence, one of the causes Mahatma Gandhi fought hard for during his days of activism was the purging of alcohol from the society.

Never in his wildest dreams would he have imagined, that one day, his image would be featured on alcoholic drink bottles.

However, that's exactly how Israel's Maika Breweries had landed in the middle of a controversy.

The beer bottle bearing his image, sporting a pair of shades and tie-sye shirt, was featured in a box set to commemmorate Israel's 71st Independence Day.

Besides Gandhi, four other personalities featured on the limited edition bottles were all Israelis - namely David Ben-Gurion, Golda Meir and Menachem Begin - all of whom are former prime ministers of Israel, as well Theodor Herzl, the father of Zionism.

Following backlash against the image, including the Indian Embassy in Israel raising the issue, Maika apologised to the Indian government for "hurting sentiments", and expressed regret over the incident.

Maika's brand manager Gilad Dror also said that the production and supply of the bottles were stopped after the embassy raised the complaint, and efforts are being made to withdraw the product from the market.

In fact, the purpose of putting Gandhi's image on the bottle was to "honour" him, Dror claimed.

This is not the first time a company had brewed controversy by putting Gandhi on their product.

In 2015, America's New England Brewing Company apologised for putting an image resembling the leader, called Gandhi-Bot, which on its India Pale Ale drink cans.

The company had described the beer as an "ideal aid for self-purification and the seeking of truth and love".
