Four individuals were recently fined a total of RM70,000 by the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for possessing uncertified communication devices.

The commission's enforcement chief Mohd Shafie Harun said all the suspects were charged at the Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur Sessions Courts with having Android TV boxes and AV senders, with the intent to sell.

"The first suspect, Chen Kar Seng, who owned Media Home Enterprise, had 146 uncertified Android TV boxes, to be sold.

"He pleaded guilty to the charge and was fined RM40,000," Mohd Shafie said in a statement.

As for the second case, three individuals, who owned MSB Technology (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, sold 7 units of AV senders which were uncertified, against the standard and bore fake certification labels.

They pleaded guilty as well and were fined RM30,000. All the items involved were confiscated by the MCMC for disposal.

Mohd Shafie further urged consumers to only purchase items bearing the MCMC logo, for their own safety, as well as to not cause disruption to other communication services.

"To ensure a device is legitimate, consumers can check their status via the Check Your Label mobile app by Sirim (Standard and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia), or online via the https://ecomm.sirim.my website."

Android TV boxes allow the online streaming of movies, documentaries and live TV channels, from legal and illegal sites on the internet for free or with a small subscription. An AV sender, meanwhile, allows users to send TV signals without wires. They use radio waves to send the signals, using a transmitter and a receiver.

MCMC says the devices encourage piracy and has even blocked the domain of several illegal stream sites which provide content that breach copyrights and intellectual property laws.
