Archer S. Suresh is the First Malaysian to Win World Archery Para Championships

  • 10 Jun 2019

Suresh Selvathamby arrived at the 2019 World Archery Para Championships ranked 35th in the world. But he left the tournament yesterday having upset the odds and made Malaysia proud by winning our first-ever gold medal at the event.

At the 2019 finals match in the Netherlands on Sunday (June 9), Suresh, who has a prosthetic leg, beat 2015 world champion Eric Bennett from United States by a score of 7 - 3 in the men's recurve event.

His win was even more noteworthy because he had fallen behind his opponent, who at one point led 3-1. But the 25-year-old Kedahan showed tremendous mental strength to come back and beat Bennet.

Malaysia's previous best performance in the world championship was in 2011, when the late Salam Sidik bagged a bronze medal.

Suresh’s win is also the first medal Malaysia has won at a major para archery event after the 2012 London Paralympic Games, when Hasihin Nawawi won silver.

Following his victory at the world championship, Suresh will compete at next year's Tokyo Paralympics.

National Para Archery coach Marzuki Zakaria said he was thankful to qualify for the Paralympics, and winning a gold medal was just an added bonus.

“Suresh had done his best, I am very happy with his performance today. He was calm and gave his 120%. To me, he has the right and deserves to be world champion,” he told FMT.

We can't wait to see him test his skills at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020. Good luck, Suresh!
