Barley water is a popular drink in Malaysia and is especially consumed when the weather is hot. Made using the grains of barley, it is considered to be one of the oldest grains in the world. Let's look at some of its benefits to the body.

1. Lowers cholesterol

A study done in 2010 revealed that barley reduces the levels of the bad cholesterol in the blood (LDL level) because it contains beta glucan in high amounts. Although the person's overall health still needs to be taken into consideration, drinking or eating barley will help to reduce the overall LDL level.

2. Balances the gut bacteria

Eating or drinking barley has also been shown to reduce a type of gut bacteria called bacteroides. This bacteria is commonly found in anaerobic infections, which occur after an injury or trauma. These infections can affect the abdomen, genitals, heart, bones, joints, and the central nervous system.

3. Lowers blood sugar levels

Barley has been shown to boost a bacteria called prevotella in the gut. These bacteria have been shown to help lower blood sugar levels for up to 11–14 hours which help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

4. Weight loss

Barley encourages the body to release hormones that make a person feel fuller for a longer period of time. The hormones are also known to boost the metabolism of the body.
