Why Did Kaalai Kathir Buvana Leave Minnal FM? Hear it From Her!

  • 03 Jun 2019

Buvana Veramohan is a well-known name among Minnal FM listeners. As one of the station's radio jockeys and producers, Buvana has hosted many shows since the beginning of her radio career.

Over the last 10 years, Buvana has been greeting her loyal listeners every morning through her signature show 'Kaalai Kathir'. In evening Aanantha Thenkatru segment, she brought her listeners back to nostalgic moments of the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s with soulful melodies. And every week, she met a new personality to interview in 'Ivvara Piramugar'.

After working in Minnal FM for over a decade and becoming a household name in Malaysia, Buvana shocked everyone by revealing her exit from Minnal FM on May 31, 2019. Here's what she said in her Facebook post:

The response has been overwhelming from her fans and here are some of the screenshots:

When we contacted her, she explained the decision was not hers.

"The management has decided to transfer me internally to a TV channel. I've been in Minnal FM for 10 years and as government staff, it's only natural to be transferred to a new department," Buvana explained.

While it's sad to leave a place that's become a second home, Buvana is excited to face this latest development in her life.

"Working at Minnal FM has prepared me for anything. The experience is priceless. I was a zero when I first came in, but now I'm confident that I've grown into a better person," she added.

When asked about her fondest memory or interview at the radio station, Buvana struggled to pick one. "There's just so many," she said.

She has met over 500 personalities in her time hosting Ivvara Piramugar. She has interviewed ministers, high-ranking government officials, celebrities, athletes, poets, heroes of the society and many more.

"It's mind-blowing to meet and learn about different peoples' stories. There was this one time I interviewed a father of one of the MH370 victims. It was one of my most difficult times on-air. I just couldn't control my tears when he spoke about the grief of losing a loved one," she said.

In another interview, she got the opportunity to speak with the actor Vijay and found herself drawn to his authentic self.

"I was not a Thalapathy fan before. But after meeting him in-person and realising how he prefers to be a regular person who wants to live a normal life like everyone else, I found myself putting him in a higher place of respect. I took a picture with him after that," she said.

But things weren't all good! Buvana has also experienced some of the toughest moments of her life at the radio station. When her father passed away in 2017, Buvana was on-air. The news came in 15 minutes before the show ended. Buvana felt devastated and left to see her family immediately.

"My father had been very ill for 2 weeks before his death and I still went to work. I still put on a smile and cheered my listeners as if everything was fine, because that's my job. Not many people can understand it," she said.

Her history and connection with Minnal FM have made her deeply attached to the radio station and she swears this separation is only temporary. Perhaps, she might return to Minnal FM once her learnings at the new place accelerate her career growth and direct her back to the radio station.

Good luck, Buvana!
