Kumari Kandam, Myth Or A Lost Civilisation?

  • 11 Jun 2019

The earth did not always look the way it is now. A billion years ago, the surface of the earth looked quite different and even the countries we are familiar were in totally different locations.
The countries and continents we know today did not exist. Instead, they were all grouped together in a land mass called Pangaea.

The reason that changed was due to the movements of the tectonic plates and continental drifts, which created mountains, submerged lands, and even caused major catastrophes such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and tsunamis.

Kumari Kandam or Lemuria?

Similar to the lost city of Atlantis and Dwaraka, it is believed that there was an ancient civilization in the past known as Kumari Kaandam.

Kumari Kandam was first mentioned in the 15th century Skanda Puranam and is said to be submerged in the Indian Ocean due to the rising sea levels after the last ice age ended.

According to India’s National Institute of Oceanography, the sea level was 100m lower around 14,500 years ago, and the rising of the sea level caused the continent to be swallowed by the sea.

Tamil Nationalists believe the now-sunken Kumari Kandam was a continent which was ruled by Pandiyan Kings for over 10,000 years and the Tamil people there migrated to other locations, forming new languages, races, and even civilizations.

Some European scholars named this continent Lemuria, and believed it was connected to Madagascar, Australia, Sri Lanka, and South India; all the way from Africa to Asia.

19th-century European geologist Phillip Lutely Sclater came up with the term Lemuria as a way to explain the migration of Madagascar lemurs to India. He then came up with the theory of a landmass which connected Africa to Asia, similar to what the Tamil Nationalists believed.

Adding to that, the founder of Theosophical Society Madam Blavatsky called the inhabitants of the submerged land as Lemurians, and believed they were lost in the catastrophe of volcanic action, sinking of continents and subterranean fire.

Due to the similarity in the theories, Lemuria and Kumari Kandam are frequently connected.
For years, many researchers and geologists have searched for answers to the mysteries behind this lost continent. While this civilization is mentioned in Hindu scriptures, there is still a lack of solid evidence to prove its existence.

But if proven, it would mean the treasures of our knowledge and culture are deeply hidden in the depths of the sea.
