MIC is urging the government to not change the name of Jalan Tun Sambanthan in Brickfields.

MIC Deputy President M Saravanan said the road, named after the party’s fifth president, should be kept out of any proposal to rename roads in Brickfields.

He was responding to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mujahid Yusof Rawa’s suggestion to rename one of the roads in Brickfields as 'Jalan Harmoni' to symbolise unity among Malaysians.

"MIC had put a lot effort to have the road named Jalan Tun Sambanthan and now they (the Pakatan Harapan government) want to change it to another name.

"You can rename Jalan Scott, Jalan Thambipillay, Jalan Berhala or Jalan Padang Belia (located in the area)," he told Malaysiakini.

Jalan Tun Sambanthan had previously been called Jalan Brickfields. Its name was changed in 1982 in recognition of the contributions of the late Tun Sambanthan, one of the nation’s independence leaders.

According to FMT, Mujahid is planning to meet Federal Territories Minister Khalid Samad to discuss the matter of the name change. However, Mujahid did not specifically suggest that Jalan Tun Sambanthan be the road that is renamed.

"I really hope the name of Jalan Harmoni can be given in this area, as in Penang where there is one street, about 1 kilometer, just like in this area there are churches, temples, temples, and mosques", he said.

Brickfields was given the title “Little India” in 2010, and Jalan Tun Sambanthan is one of the main roads in the area.

Saravanan is not the only one who responded negatively to Mujahid’s suggestion. Brickfields Rukun Tetangga chairman S Kanakiahnaidu poured cold water on Mujahid’s proposal, saying that every road in Brickfields had its own unique history and heritage.

Netizens have also demanded that the road not be considered for the name change, arguing that roads named after people who’ve contributed to the nation should not be meddled with.
