The rising costs of living in modern Malaysia is taking a heavy toll on families around the country.

Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Hannah Yeoh has revealed that financial problems have become the main cause of divorce among non-Muslims.

Stats show that from 6,901 non-Muslim divorces reported in 2018, 2,971 cases cited financial issues as the reason.

Speaking at the recent Women of Will's (WOW) Community Kitchen programme on 25th May, Hannah explained why financial issues are a pressing concern in marriages: "Financial problem is a huge thing. Based on National Registration Department marriage tribunal statistics, the majority of divorce cases was due to financial problems."

She said financial problems also contribute to child abuse cases.

"Financial problems, divorce cases, and child abuse are inter-related. When divorce is due to finance, the mother would lose a source of income and is pressured, which could lead to child abuse," she explained.
