The current hot weather has most of us feeling tired, restless and uncomfortable. The excess sweating would also cause an electrolyte imbalance in the body.

While most people would instinctively reach for water, coconut water would be a great alternative not only to rehydrate the body but also to replenish any loss of nutrients. Here are the reasons to make the switch.

1. Good source of nutrients

Coconut water is an excellent source of fiber, vitamin C and minerals such as magnesium, manganese, potassium and even calcium.

2. Help to control diabetes

Research has shown that it has the ability to lower blood sugar levels in diabetic animals. In one study, diabetic rats who were tested to have better blood sugar levels compared to the control group when treated with coconut water. However, more research is needed to confirm if the same effects can be replicated in humans.

As it is a good source of magnesium, it is able to help diabetic and pre-diabetic patients to control their blood sugar and increase their insulin sensitivity.

3. Support heart health

Studies have shown that rats that were given a significant amount of the water had a decrease of liver fat, their blood cholesterol and triglycerides decreased.

As for humans, although not encouraged to drink copious amounts of coconut water, a reasonable amount of coconut water has shown to reduce cholesterol just like a statin drug would.

4. Reduce blood pressure

In one study, people with high blood pressure showed improved systolic blood pressure after consuming coconut water for some time. The reason could be because it contains
600mg of potassium in just 240 ml. Potassium has been shown to lower blood pressure in people with high or normal blood pressure.
