Why Do You Need to Take Tamarind During Pregnancy?

  • 06 May 2019

Tamarind is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, making it good for pregnant women when consumed moderately.

Its sweet and sour taste is able to satisfy women who crave sour food especially during their first trimester. Because the body is flooded with hormones, a pregnant woman’s eating habits changes to adapt and sustain the body during the pregnancy. This change is called ‘dysgeusia’.

The fruit is rich in iron and when consumed moderately, it balances the increased volume of blood in the body. This in turn reduces the chances of a premature birth and helps the baby to maintain a healthy weight throughout the pregnancy.

The potassium in tamarind lowers the blood pressure of women who experience high blood pressure. They could either have already been suffering from it before falling pregnant or during the third trimester, close to delivery.

When taken especially during the first trimester, it helps to control morning sickness. But because of its laxative effects, it can’t be taken often. It is rich in niacin (Vitamin B3), which the foetus needs to develop its nerves, brain and digestive system.
