Muslim preacher Mohammad Zamri Vinoth has been arrested for allegedly insulting Hinduism.

The 34-year-old, who is a disciple of controversial Indian cleric Zakir Naik, was nabbed by Perlis police in Kangar after at least 13 reports were lodged against him for a speech he gave at a mosque in Kelantan on Dec 30 2018.

He is now being investigated under Section 298A of the Penal Code for causing disunity and spurring hatred among the people, as well as Section 233 of the Multimedia and Communications Act for misusing network facilities and services.

According to Perlis police chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Noor Mushar Mohamad, Zamri also has a criminal record.

“He is being investigated for voluntarily causing hurt, for criminal breach of trust and over a rape case,” said SAC Noor Mushar, according to a report in The Star.

What did Zamri say?

Zamri got into trouble after a video of his talk at the As-Siddiqin Mosque in Kampung Panchor, Kelantan went viral. In the 10-minute long clip, Zamri talks about his conversion to Islam.

However, a lot of what he said infuriated people, who felt it was deeply offensive and insulting to Hinduism and Christianity.

Claiming Hindus worshipped 330 million gods, Zamri, smirking, said that before he converted from Hinduism to Islam, thought he wouldn't be able to worship all the gods even if he prayed to a different one every day till the day he died.

Going further, he said Hindus prayed to stones and fed food to stones.

"This is totally illogical. I cannot brain," he told his audience.

Hinduism, the world's oldest living religion has almost one billion adherents around the world and is the third-largest religion globally.

Hindu author Sitansu Chakravarti in Hinduism: A Way of Life (1991) explained Hinduism.

"Hinduism is a monotheistic religion which believes that God manifests Himself or Herself in several forms. One is supposed to worship the form that is most appealing to the individual without being disrespectful to other forms of worship."

Zamri, the president of an NGO of converted preachers called Angkatan Skuad Mubaligh Malaysia, also put down Christianity's concept of the Holy Trinity.

Zamri's statements, and the video, has come under heavy criticism from many Malaysians, Muslim and non-Muslim alike, who have called the preacher out and said he didn't need to insult other religions to propagate his own.

Of the two acts he is being investigated under, the CMA is less potent and only provides for a jail term of one year. If he is charged under the Penal Code, he could be jailed for a lot longer.
