Here's why you should visit Thailand next month

  • 22 Mar 2019

If you happen to be around Thailand in the month of April, then you'd definitely not want to miss the Songkran, Thailand's famous water festival.

Songkran is derived from 'samkranti', a Sanskrit word which means astrological passage. This festival is celebrated from 13th to 15th April yearly, which marks the beginning of Thai New Year.

On these days, a huge crowd gathers on the streets and splash water, soaking everyone around. This signifies cleansing and renewal. The Thais also pour water on monks and Buddha images, in a bathing ritual which is believed to bring good luck.

April is a month when many tourists visit Thailand to witness this spectacular event and be a part of it. So if you're heading to Thailand for the water festival, here's what you need to do:

Book everything in advance

The transportation fare (air, bus or train tickets) and accommodation in Thailand get very expensive during Songkran. So plan your travel ahead, and book your tickets and accommodation in advance. Else, it might put a hole in your wallet.

Spend on quality waterproof casing

No one will spare you. You will be soaked in water and it's wiser to protect your gadgets with quality waterproof gadgets. But instead of buying the casing in advance, you can buy it on the day for a really good bargain.

Beware of thieves

Snatch thieves always look forward to a crowded area to steal and Songkran is indeed the best place for them to target. Keep your gadgets safe and bring limited money, to avoid being the target of pickpockets. They are never on a festival break.

Do not bring your passport

It is not a wise move to bring your passport along during the water festival. Ensure you have a safe in your hotel room, and lock your passports and valuables inside. Bring a photocopy of your passport which is properly sealed, for emergency purposes.

Shop till you drop

Everything is on sale during Songkran! From branded items to local products, everything can be really cheap during this time of the year. Don't forget to book extra luggage space for your trip home.
