SPM or STPM results a letdown? It's not the end of the world!

  • 13 Mar 2019

It's the time of the year when students finally get their SPM and STPM results, and make the big decision on the next stage of their lives.

Congratulations to the students who've passed the exams with flying colours. And for the students who failed to get the result they expected, fret not. Don't let this bump in the road stop you from pursuing your dreams.

Formal education is not the only way to attain success in life. There are ample opportunities out there for those that take the initiative to look for them.

Parents play a vital role in helping students get over their results and focus on the next step. It's also a crucial time in the lives of students who have done well - some are unable to cope with the pressure and fall into depression.

According to Education Counsellor Nageswary Visvanathan, this is what parents should do to help their children:

# Some parents might get overly disappointed when their child fails to meet expectations. However, it is not a wise move to show them how unhappy you are. You need to give your children the confidence to try again. Help them believe that it's not the end of the world.

# There are plenty of opportunities out there for your kids. Have a proper discussion with your children and let them decide which path will be more suitable for them to pursue if they are not academically inclined.

# When a relative is curious to know your kid's result, be honest and tell them the truth. Don't pretend or lie about the result, which will cause your child to lose self-esteem. Your child's poor results is nothing to be embarrassed about. What matters most is their next step towards attaining success.

# Motivate your children. Do not degrade or compare them to other children who have performed better. This is the time you need to help your children build confidence.
