Malaysian Indian Writers Who Write Absolutely Brilliantly in Malay

Despite it not being their mother tongue, many of these Malaysian Indian writers can put anyone to shame for their prowess in the Malay language.

While rarely spoken or written about, many of these writers have been writing in our national language for many years, with some even having produced great literary works.

Here are some Malaysian Indian writers you should take note of and perhaps even grab a copy of their work!

Anuradha Chelliah

Born KA. S. Annadurai, Anuradha is a linguist and a teacher from Kamunting, Perak. To date, some of her short stories and poems in the Malay language have been published in Dewan Bahasa and Busana Bahasa, an anthology produced by Kumpulan Sasterawan Kavyan.

Ramakrishnan Ramasamy

In 1997, Ramakrishnan Ramasamy was selected to be part of the Minggu Penulis Remaja which was organised by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka. The writer has produced many poems which has appeared in Dewan Siswa, Dewan Budaya, Berita Harian, Tunas Cipta and Karya.

Elavarassan M. Suppiah

Just like Ramakrishnan, Elavarassan was selected to be part of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka's Minggu Penulis Remaja in 2012 and 2018. His poems have been published in Kuntum, Remaja, and several other Malay language anthologies. The writer was also selected to travel to the United Kingdom in 2013 as part of the Kembara Penulis Muda program by the Malaysian Institute of Translation & Books (ITBM) and Persatuan Penulis Nasional Malaysia (PENA). Unfortunately, due to his low-profile nature, there are no images of this writer.

Ignatius Dev Anand

Considered a prolific writer in the 1960s, Ignatius Dev Anand was also an editor. He had published many books in both the Malay and English language. Among his well-known Malay titles are "Pesta Ria dan Cerita Lain" (1966) and "Jantan Handal dan Cerita Lain" (1967). Sadly, he went off radar and no one knows what happened to him.

Uthaya Sankar SB

Starting out as a news editor and a newscaster, Uthaya Sankar SB is the founder of the Kumpulan Sasterawan Kavyan, a group consisting of Malaysian Indian writers who write in the Malay language. He has written many books and anthologies in the Malay language. He has also translated several Indian literatures such as "Megha Duta" and the "Thirukkural" into the Malay language.
