'Bhoot Mela', A Festival To Get Rid Of Ghosts & Evil Spirits

  • 28 Jul 2019

Every year, thousands of devotees flock to Malajpur, a small village in Madhya Pradesh, for a grand and unique fair - a celebration devoted to exorcising ghosts.
The devotees who attend this fair believe taking part in this month-long festival helps get rid of bad vibes, which makes their lives prosperous.
The celebration is held at the Devji Maharaj Mandir in Malajpur village, which houses the samadhi of Guru Deoji - a guru who was believed to have been born with supernatural powers in 1700 AD.
Following his death, exorcism has been conducted in this temple for over two and a half centuries. The festival commences on pournami, where arthi and pooja are conducted for the guru's samadhi before the exorcism rituals are performed.
The exorcisms are conducted for free, and devotees join the fair to get rid of evil spirits, ghosts, and demons. Once the poojas are conducted, holy waters are sprinkled and that's when some become hysterical and collapse unconscious.
The devotees light camphor tablets on their palm to get rid of evil spirits; some are even smacked with brooms for the same reason. Surprisingly, most of the devotees who take part in the festival claim to have an improved life after.
This celebration is held around February every year, and thousands of devotees attend the festival from Madya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Andhra Pradesh.
