India Building World's Tallest Murugan Statue

  • 01 Jul 2019

Visited by millions of devotees and tourists yearly, Batu Caves is one of the most famous Murugan temples in the world.

The temple, famous for its massive Thaipusam celebration, has the largest and most iconic gold-plated Murugan statue in the world.

But, a new Murugan statue being built in Vanapadi, a village in Salem, India will soon tower over the Batu Caves Murugan statue. When completed, it will be 146-feet tall – 6 feet more than the Batu Caves statue – and will become the world's largest Murugan statue.

Thiagarajan Stabathy, the designer who worked on Malaysia's Batu Caves Murugan statue, is the same person entrusted to design the Salem Murugan statue as well.

The statue is halfway done and is expected to be completed in several months. However, many have raised the question of why funds are spent on this statue when many citizens of India are struggling without basic necessities.
