When director Mani Ratnam first revealed his plans to bring the historical novel by Kalki Krishnamurthy, Ponniyin Selvan, alive on screen, lyricist Vairamuthu was reportedly roped in to pen the songs in the film.

However, the news was met with a huge backlash from singer Chimayi Sripada and netizens as the legendary poet was in the mid of a #MeToo scandal. Singer Chinmayi was against Vairamuthu's involvement in the film.

Earlier this year, Chinmayi shared her personal experience of allegedly facing harassment in 2005/6  at the hands of Vairamuthu. Following her allegations, many women who were purportedly victimized by celebrities and influential personalities in the industry came forth to tell their stories.

Now that Ponniyin cast and crew have been officially released, Vairamuthu's name is nowhere to be found, sparking questions if the lyricist has been sacked from the film.

Ponniyin Selvan is Mani Ratnam's dream project, which has been rumoured as the reason why the director avoided adding a controversial figure like Vairamuthu in the making of the film.

The historical film adaptation has a star-studded cast of Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Sarath Kumar, Jayaram, Ashwin Kakumanu, and others. The film is jointly scripted by Mani Ratnam and actor-writer Kumaravel.
