If you were looking forward to the sequel of the highly successful "Vada Chennai", then we have some sad news to deliver.

A source close to the film's unit has confirmed that the project has been shelved, although in the earlier stages of the filming, director Vetri Maaran had revealed at a press meet that they have completed 30% of shooting.

The team had previously announced that the film will get two more sequels when it was released in 2018.

"Vada Chennai" is the third collaboration of Dhanush and Vetrimaaran, which became the highest-grossing film in Dhanush's career and is known as one of the best gangster films ever made in Kollywood.

The film, which is set in North Madras, also stars Aishwarya Rajesh, Ameer, Andrea Jeremiah, Kishore and Samuthirakani, and chronicles 30 years in the life of an accidental gangster.

The source said, "Though Vada Chennai did well at the box office, the residents of north Chennai weren't happy about the way their lifestyle has been portrayed on-screen. Vetri Maaran is now finding it tough to shoot for the remaining sequences in the same locality. Moreover, a couple of artists who played pivotal roles in Vada Chennai got busy with other projects. That's why the film has been shelved."

They also revealed that Vetri Maaran is concentrating on making a web-series on the film. "Vada Chennai" is a three-part series, according to the filmmaker. At this point, it is unclear whether the remaining two parts would be shot or not.

The filmmaker earlier said that there is a web-series titled "Rajan Vagaiyara", which is based on Ameer's character in the film, in the making.

"We'd like to explore the prequel idea. I think it'd be best suited as a web series on some digital platform. The prequel will be called Rajan Vagaira, and it will track the rise of Rajan's character in Vada Chennai and how he built his empire," he said

Currently, Dhanush and Vetri Maaran are working on "Asuran", which is based on a Tamil novel titled Vetkai.
