This story by Shalini Namas was originally featured on Malaysian Indian Anthology and has been reproduced in Astro Ulagam.

K Thamboosamy Pillay, a name not so famed today, but was a prominent figure in the late 1870s. He worked with the British Residents (Yes, the names that we have read in our History textbook).

He was the Chief Clerk of Treasury who was privileged to act as the State Treasurer during the latter’s absence.

He (and his business partner) were the first to install electric generator pumps for tin mining purposes.

He later ventured into various businesses. Apart from his businesses, education and social life were also given priority. He was one of the proud founders of the famed Victoria Institution & The Royal Selangor Club.

He was also the founder of prominent temples around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

He took his last breath in Singapore on July 22, 1902. Bringing his body back to KL was a challenge but, Sir Frank Swettenham lent his private yacht to bring his body back for the final rites in KL.

His great deal of contributions to the nation will always be in concrete form around KL and Selangor, and I am proud to say that this unsung Hero was my great-great grandfather.
