Ztish: It Was A Tough Decision, But I Will Surely Make A Comeback

  • 04 Apr 2018

Life is never easy for me! My life begun in Klang and my family shifted to Seri Kembangan when I was still a little kid. I was the second child for my parents, and I have 3 siblings.

I came from a family where none was interested in learning or composing music, except for an uncle who can sing well. But the rest was interested in listening to songs of course!

When I was a small kid, during my primary school days, I had no idea what song composing is about and I’ve never even heard the word before. But I remember sitting by the school bus window and humming new tunes each day, without even realizing that I’m actually composing my own tunes.

When I was 16 years old, I realized my passion for music. I enrolled to learn guitar, however, my guitar-learning journey ended within a year as I was having some nerve related health issues and was unable to play that instrument. But, I didn’t want my passion to end there. Hence, I learned piano instead, and this time I learned it via YouTube tutorials.

It was right after SPM and it was finally time for me to figure out my path, which will somehow determine my future. I was in a huge dilemma that time, unable to decide which way to go. But knowing that music is my passion, it was my uncle who encouraged me to pursue my studies in the field of music.

My parents encouraged me to follow my dreams, however, also warned me that it was my decision and I should somehow bear if things didn’t turn out the way I wanted. There were also some who discouraged me and stressed that I’m making a wrong decision.

Further down the road, I enrolled at the LimKokWing University of Creative Technology and completed my Diploma in Sound and Music and Bachelor in Recording Arts. Mixing with students from different background across the globe gave me more exposure and I was exposed to the different kind of musical instruments.

During my university days, I was given an opportunity to compose a BGM for a short film titled ‘Inai’, which was directed by a fellow student Shalini Balasundaram - the director of Geethaiyin Raadhai!

The opportunity to compose 5 songs for the movie Geethayin Raadhai gave me a huge break and make me create a name for myself. ‘Ennai Kollathe’ became a super hit and got over 12 million views! I couldn’t thank the viewers enough for supporting our local songs. Following that, I also worked in famous local movies namely Aasaan and Jhangri!

In my journey, I can’t thank my parents enough. I didn’t own a studio at first and I depended on secondhand instruments. But my parents lend a helping hand financially and helped me set up my own studio at home.

When I first stepped foot in this industry, I wanted to head to India to gain knowledge and to look for opportunity. But over time, I learned that this is where I want to be and I want to create songs that can reach up to the other side of the globe.

And one of my biggest dreams is to start a music school for children and to compose songs with orchestra. Even though this is common among big music composers in India, yet it has yet to be commenced in Malaysia. Fingers crossed, I wish to turn my dream into a reality in the future.

However, survival is extremely difficult in this industry, especially without a permanent job and a stable income. Moreover, the amount of stress I endure has given me several health issues which I had to focus at the moment. Thus, I was planning to take a short break very soon to get my life back on track; but I will surely make a comeback.
